Algodon MéxicoOur Product’s History

The word cotton is derived from the Arabic word “al qatan”. One of the first archeological discoveries of cotton usage in the world is located in Pakistan at Mohenjo Daro. That place is over 5,000 years old, but no one still knows how old the cotton plant is. The cotton plant is a perennial tree, which means that it last many years. Because of this, the plant is able of grow year after year, producing flowers and bolls, as long as conditions are appropriate for growth. This fiber is a warm climate crop. It is planted in spring or early summer and harvested in late fall or early winter. Cotton does not like water very much. Water requirements of cotton depend on weather conditions, but a successful cotton harvest requires at least 75 cm of rain or irrigation water on average. Although cotton is planted in both hemispheres, most of it is cultivated in the Northern Hemisphere.

Cotton is a major natural fiber crop, and also provides edible oil and seed by-products for livestock food. However, most of the research on cotton and the treatment it receives in the world are limited o its recognition as a fiber crop. Cottonseed accounts for two-thirds of the weight of harvest, but all-out efforts are made to improve primarily the fiber produced. This fiber has an impact on our lives beyond recognition, and genetic engineering technology has the potential to improve cotton further.

Cotton is a major agricultural and industrial crop that provides employment and income for hundreds of millions of people involved on its production, processing and marketing in more than 60 countries. For many countries in the developing world, cotton forms the economic base and is a major foreign exchange earner
